Hi Reader,
When you’re building an email automation, it’s easy to get caught up in making all the pieces work together.
The form, tags, sequence and Visual Automation might look neatly connected inside Kit, but the person joining your list sees none of that. They just see a page, an inbox and whatever happens next.
So how do you find out what that experience is actually like?
You go through it yourself. 😊
Experience your own sign-up process
Set aside 10 minutes and go through your most important sign-up process as if you’d never heard of your business. Use a fresh email address if you can, so existing tags or purchases don’t affect what happens.
Start on the sign-up page and note what it's saying to someone who may have only discovered you a few minutes ago. Subscribe and then follow the journey through to the first useful action you’re asked to take.
Here’s what I’d check:
- Does the sign-up form make it clear what happens after you subscribe?
- If you use double opt-in, does the confirmation email arrive and make sense?
- Is the promised resource easy to find and get access to?
- Does the welcome email sound like the same person who wrote the sign-up page?
- Is there one clear next step, and does its link work?
- How does it all look on your phone?
Leave your test email address subscribed and see what arrives over the following few days. Is the follow-up useful and relevant?
Or is there an awkward tumbleweed-like silence, or worse, a sudden sales pitch? 🤦🏻♂️
Fix the first broken promise
You’ll probably spot several things you could improve, but you don’t need to rebuild your entire system today.
Start with the point where the experience feels like it's not what you promised the subscriber.
Perhaps the download link is buried, the first email assumes the subscriber already knows you, or the sequence promotes an offer before you’ve helped them get started.
When building your automation, the diagram tells you what Kit has been instructed to do, but only by going through the process yourself, will you see (and feel) what a subscriber actually experiences. You need both views.
💡My suggestion for this week:
Subscribe through your most important form and write down the first thing you’d change.
If you find something surprising, hit reply and tell me what it was. I’m curious about the little gaps that only become obvious when you’re on the receiving end.

After you've done this little exercise, ask yourself this question and answer it honestly...
Would your experience make you want to stay a subscriber on your own email list?
If you spot something surprising, hit reply and tell me what it was. I’m curious about the little gaps that only become obvious when you’re looking at it through a subscriber's lens.
For the next couple of days, I'll be mostly spending time with my family, whilst keeping an eye on the F1® in Baku! 🏎️ 🏁
Whatever you have planned this weekend, enjoy!
Cheers,
John
